What is RCD Testing?

A Residential Current Device is a safety device that’s designed to quickly disconnect electrical power when an imbalance in the electrical current is detected. An RCD is more sensitive than normal fuses and circuit breakers, meaning it offers a better level of protection.
An RCD works by:
- Monitoring the flow of electricity in a circuit
- Detecting whether the electricity is flowing through an unintended path (such as a person)
- Quickly turning the electricity off, if a fault is detected
The RCD is usually installed on the main electrical distribution board (the fuse box) of a building. This installation point enables it to protect multiple circuits at the same time.
What Happens in an RCD Test?
The RCD test involves intentionally triggering the Residential Current Device to ensure that it’s working properly.
The contractor will simulate a fault, which should then cause the RCD to tip and cut off the power. This should happen within a specific timeframe to be considered safe.
Why is RCD Testing Important?
First of all, RCDs are essential for keeping electrical circuits, businesses and staff safe. Whilst RCDs are not completely failsafe, they do offer around 97% reliability when serviced and checked properly.
Secondly, employers have a legal duty to ensure the safety of their employees and buildings. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 demand that all electrical systems should be maintained and kept in a safe condition. This includes RCDs.
Also, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 act stipulates that employers must take reasonable precautions to prevent workplace hazards, such as electrical fires. Why does my RCD keep tripping?
There are a few reasons why your RCD might trip:
- A faulty or malfunctioning appliance can cause a leak of current to the ground, which will trigger the RCD.
- Worn or frayed cables can cause a ground fault, which would cause the RCD to trip.
- Plugging too many appliances in can overload the circuit, causing a trip.
- Water or dampness in any of the electrical components could also lead to the RCP tripping.
