What Is an RCD Ramp Test and Why Does Your Business Need One?

Share via:

If your business relies on electrical systems, you must ensure they are safe and in top working condition. One way you can do this is through regular RCD ramp tests. A RCD ramp test checks that your Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are working correctly, ready to protect against electrical shocks and fires.

What is an RCD?

Before we touch on an RCD test, we’ll talk about the RCD itself.

An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety switch that cuts off electricity if it detects a fault, for example, current leaking to the earth. Because the device cuts off the electricity in the event of a disruption, it can help prevent electric shocks and fires, making it essential for protecting people and property, whether in homes or workplaces.

What is an RCD Ramp Test?

A ramp test RCD assesses the sensitivity of your RCD installations by gradually increasing the current until the device trips. This process will demonstrate the exact current level that will cause the RCD to activate. Then, you’ll know that it responds quickly and effectively to electrical faults.

Why Is an RCD Ramp Test Essential for Your Business?

    1. Safety: RCDs are designed to prevent electric shocks because they detect leakage in the current. Regular ramp testing confirms that the RCD is tripping at the correct level (I.E., before the current gets too high), offering essential protection for anyone using electric devices.
  • Equipment: Faulty RCDs can lead to equipment faults or damage. By conducting regular ramp tests, you can ensure the RCD is working correctly, ready to spring into action should there be an electrical fault.
  • Compliance: The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to ensure all electrical systems are safe and well-maintained. A ramp test is one way you can ensure this.
  • Avoid Nuisance Tripping: Like your smoke alarm will beep if it’s low on battery, your RCD might trip without a clear cause if there is something wrong with it. A ramp test can help determine whether the device is overly sensitive or whether there’s an underlying issue with the device.

Understanding RCD Ramp Test Results

Ramp test results will be slightly different, depending on what device you have.

For example, a 30mA RCD should trip when the current reaches around 30 milliamps. If, during the test, it trips significantly below that, it might be too sensitive. On the other hand, if the device doesn’t trip until the current gets much higher, it might not offer enough protection.

How Often Should You Arrange an RCD Ramp Test?

This will vary from site to site, as it depends on the environment you work in and how risky that is considered to be. High-risk premises, like those with wet conditions or heavy machinery, might need more frequent testing. You should speak with a qualified RCD testing company to understand the most appropriate testing frequency for your business.

Both very professional, approachable and very well organised, which made the whole process run smoothly. Everything was explained clearly, disruption was kept to a minimum, and it was obvious they take pride in doing the job properly.

Several people commented on how efficient and pleasant you were to deal with.

Thanks again for your hard work — it was genuinely appreciated. We would be more than happy to have the same engineers again next year.

GeneFirst Ltd has been using Hawkesworth Appliance Testing for the last 2 years at our current site location.
Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Kobla Dogbatse the PAT engineer from Hawkesworth and he was fantastic.
Kobla, was efficient and thorough with his work, he was polite and pleasure to have on site.
He was respectful to all staff members by trying to limit any distraction or disturbance when conducting his work on any appliances that the team would be using.
This year I was lucky enough to have Kobla come back and I was thrilled to have him back as I knew the work would be done to the highest standards.
I allowed him to continue with his work without supervision and once finished he came into my office with a smile on his face and said everything is done and its all good.
I would highly recommend Hawkesworth to other companies as they are efficient with their communication and their engineers are a pleasure to have on site.
Thank you again for the great work and I hope to continue using your services in the future.
