A Thermographic Survey, also known as a thermal imaging survey, uses infrared thermal imaging to compare heat patterns across electrical equipment and identify anomalies that may require further investigation. It is a condition-monitoring tool that can support a planned electrical maintenance regime. It does not replace periodic inspection and testing or an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
Before attendance, Hawkesworth agrees the equipment to be surveyed, access arrangements, operating conditions, known restrictions and reporting scope. Thermal imaging is most useful when the equipment is energised and carrying a normal or representative load, because the surveyor can compare temperatures under realistic operating conditions. Any live survey activity is subject to a suitable risk assessment, safe system of work and safe access to the equipment.
The client receives an electronic report containing thermal and supporting images, asset references, findings and recommended next steps. This creates a clear visual record for maintenance planning and prioritisation. Where follow-up work falls within Hawkesworth’s scope, a separate quotation can be provided before work begins.

What is an electrical Thermographic Survey?

What can thermal imaging identify?
It can highlight temperature differences that may be associated with a connection, component or loading condition requiring closer examination. The likely cause must be assessed in context rather than assumed from the image alone.
Does thermography replace an EICR?
No. It is a complementary condition-monitoring technique and does not replace an EICR or other periodic inspection and testing.
Does equipment need to be operating during the survey?
Usually, yes, because electrical load is needed to produce meaningful temperature differences. The survey is only carried out where the risk assessment, safe system of work and site conditions allow.
