Fire Safety in the Workplace

RCD Testing Sheffield

At Hawkesworth, we offer comprehensive RCD testing in Sheffield.

RCD testing ensures all RCD units in your business premises are working correctly, helping reduce the likelihood of fires, electric shocks or breakdowns, in the event of an electrical fault.

About RCDs

An RCD is a safety switch that monitors the flow of electricity and quickly shuts off the power if a problem is detected.

RCDs can help prevent faults caused by things like surges, equipment malfunctions or excess demand on the grid. They do this by quickly detecting any imbalances between the live and neutral wires. If an imbalance is detected, the RCD quickly detects the fault and trips the circuit within milliseconds, helping prevent electric shocks, fires and equipment damage.

About RCD Testing

The RCD testing process is as follows:

    1. Isolation and set up: The RCD is isolated from the main system to prevent any disruption during the test.
    2. Testing and inspection: Our electrical engineer will visually check for any issues, such as wire damage. Then, a simulated fault test is performed. The electrician forces the RCD to trip and checks that it does so in the correct time.
  • Final checks and certification: If the RCD has passed, it is recorded as safe. If not, repairs or replacement will be advised.

Regular testing ensures your system stays safe and compliant, protecting your business and team from electrical hazards.

FAQs

Can I check the RCD myself?

Yes, you can check the RCD yourself using the built-in test button. However, you should still arrange regular professional inspections on top of this.

To test the unit yourself:

  • Find the RCD – it will usually be in your fuse box.
  • Press the ‘test’ button – this will stimulate the fault and should cause the RCD to trip and cut the power.
  • Reset – If everything has worked as it should, switch it back on and you’re good to go. If the RCD hasn’t cut the power, contact a professional.

How often do I need to arrange RCD testing Sheffield?

It depends what industry you are in, but as a general guide you should arrange professional testing roughly every 6-12 months. If you work in a ‘high risk’ environment, like a construction site or manufacturing premises, every 3 months is advisable.
