RCD Testing London
RCD testing London ensures the safety of an electrical installation. It also ensures that installation runs perfectly, without causing damage to other electrical components.
At Hawkesworth, we offer comprehensive RCD testing in London.
About RCDs
RCDs are a group of switches that control the flow of electricity in case of imbalances. If there is a disturbance, for example a storm surge or a heavy load on the grid, the RCD will redirect the current to prevent faults.
RCDs are the first line of defence against electrical imbalances, making them essential for protecting electrical installations and the people who use your building. Without an RCD, an installation would be vulnerable to being overwhelmed by large currents, causing electrical shocks, fires and potentially complete failure of the electrical kit.
About RCD Testing
RCD testing London is essential for ensuring all RCDs are running as they should. The process of testing RCDs is as follows.
- Before the test, the RDC will be separated from the main installation, isolating it so it can’t cause any damage if it turns out to be faulty.
- Our electricians will then calibrate the RCD tester to make sure it provides accurate readings in terms of current, load and response time.
- Next, comes the test. RCD testing involves several steps to check whether the RCD performs the functions it should, within the correct time frame. One part is a visual inspection. Another part is a simulated surge. In the simulated surge our electricians will force the RCD to trip, checking it does so in the correct time frame.
- The final step is a rated current test. This checks that the RCD trips at the right residual current rating.

FAQs
How often should I arrange RCD testing?
In commercial and industrial settings, RCD testing should be arranged roughly every 6 – 12 months. In construction sites, where the risk is considered higher, you should arrange tests every 3 months.
What happens if the RCD fails the test?
If the RCD fails it’s unlikely that it will provide proper protection against faults and fires. In which case, it should be replaced or fixed immediately.
