Fire Safety in the Workplace

RCD Testing Birmingham

We offer comprehensive RCD testing in Birmingham, keeping businesses safe and compliant.

RCD testing ensures all of the RCD units on your business are functioning properly, reducing the risk of fires, electric shocks or equipment failures should there be an electrical fault.

About RCDs

An RCD is a safety switch that monitors the flow of electricity, immediately shutting off the power if an issue is detected.

RCDs help prevent faults caused by surges, equipment malfunctions or excessive demand on the grid. The RCD works by quickly detecting an imbalance between the live wire and the neutral wires. If the unit spots an imbalance, it will trip the circuit within milliseconds, helping to prevent any further damage.

About RCD Testing

The RCD testing process is as follows:

  • First, the RCD is isolated from the main system to help prevent any disruption during the test.
  • Next, our engineers will visually check for issues like damaged wiring.
  • Then, a simulated fault will be completed. This is to ‘force’ the RCD to trip. Our electricians will then ensure the RCD trips within an appropriate time.
  • Finally, our engineers will issue certification, if the RCD has passed the test. Otherwise, they will advise repair/replacement.

Regular testing helps keep your system safe, protecting your business and team from electrical hazards.

FAQs

How do I know if the RCD needs to be tested?

You should test your RCD regularly to ensure it’s working properly. You should be able to do this by pressing a button on the front of the unit.

If your RCD fails (it doesn’t trip when you press the button), you should arrange professional RCD testing in Birmingham.

How often should I test the RCD?

You should complete a self-test roughly every three months. Then, you should arrange professional RCD testing around every 6-12 months, or more frequently if the RCD does not trip when you self test.

Note: If your building is considered a high risk environment, such as a construction site or a manufacturing premises, you might need to arrange RCD testing more often. Potentially every 3 months.
