Fire Safety in the Workplace

RCD Test London

At Hawkesworth, we offer a comprehensive RCD test London.

An RCD test is the best way to ensure all RCD units in your business or commercial premises are in full working order. This helps reduce the likelihood of fires, electric shocks or breakdown.

About RCDs

An RCD (or residual current device) is a safety device that quickly cuts off the electricity supply when it detects an imbalance (or leakage) in the current. This can help prevent electric shocks and fires.

An RCD does this by monitoring the flow of electricity in a circuit, constantly comparing the current flowing in and out. RCDs are installed into a circuit with both the live and neutral wires passing through. Both wires are connected to coils, and these coils are wrapped around the iron core of the RCD.

When the current passing through each wire is the same, the magnetic fields in the device neutralise each other. However, if the current in one wire drops, then the magnetic field will reduce. This causes an imbalance which attracts the iron in the device towards the core, breaking the circuit and tripping the system.

RCD vs Circuit Breaker

Residual current devices and circuit breakers are both safety devices, but they work slightly differently. An RCD protects against electric shock by detecting and interrupting current leakage, whilst a circuit breaker protects against overloads and short circuits.

About RCD Testing

If you need RCD testing London, the process goes something like this…

  • An RCD tester will conduct a visual inspection first, looking for any signs of damage or wear and tear. This also includes checking that the device is properly installed and that all connections are secure.
  • The tester will then choose the appropriate method for testing based on the RCD type.
  • The test itself simulates a fault in the system. Once the fault has been simulated, the tester will check how quickly the RCD responded.
  • Lastly, the results will be checked to see if further action or testing is needed.

Regular testing ensures your system stays safe and compliant, protecting your business and team from electrical hazards. Not only is testing good for your peace of mind, but you are also legally required to keep employees safe. Ensuring electrical systems and devices are in good working order is one way to do this.

FAQs

How often should I arrange RCD testing?

In commercial and industrial settings, RCD testing should be arranged roughly every 6 – 12 months. In construction sites, where the risk is considered higher, you should arrange tests every 3 months.

What happens if the RCD fails the test?

If the RCD fails it’s unlikely that it will provide proper protection against faults and fires. In which case, it should be replaced or fixed immediately.
