The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) detail that the building occupier is responsible for checking all electrical equipment is safe for use and compliant with regulations. The Importance of Portable Appliance Testing for Schools
According to Gov.uk, in 2020 there were almost 20,000 accidental fires of electrical origin in the UK. Of those fires, 15% were caused by faulty appliances and leads. As well as fires, faulty appliances can also cause injuries like electric shocks.
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the easiest way to ensure your school’s electrical equipment is safe.
PAT testing is the process of regularly testing electrical equipment (usually once a year), to ensure everything is in good working order. A competent and trained person will conduct a formal visual inspection and a manual examination, using a portable appliance tester device.
You will then receive a portable appliance testing certificate and a detailed report of each appliance tested, and whether it has passed or failed. You will also be recommended when to retest.
