You’ve just got a shiny piece of new electrical equipment for your office or rental property. The question is… where do you stand on PAT testing new appliances?
Here is our guide to PAT testing new equipment and the rules you need to know.
Do new appliances need PAT testing?
The good news is you don’t have to PAT test new equipment as it should have been supplied to you in a safe condition. Just carry out a quick visual check before using it (for example, checking the cables and plug for damage) and you should be good to go.
However, there may be times when PAT testing new items can put your mind at ease. For example, if you think it might have been damaged in transit or you can’t see a BSI kitemark.
It’s also worth checking your insurance. Some insurance providers may insist that all equipment on your premises, including new items, are PAT tested.

How does PAT testing help protect new equipment?
A PAT testing engineer will carry out a thorough visual inspection as well as electrical tests on your new equipment. This can give you peace of mind that your appliances are safe, and means they can be added to your asset register for future checks.
While it’s rare for new appliances to fail PAT testing, it can happen. Our engineers have failed brand new items that have been wired incorrectly or have turned out to be counterfeit.
