Do I have to PAT test second-hand equipment?

Do I have to PAT test second-hand equipment?

Do you need to get second-hand electrical equipment PAT tested? In this short guide, we’ll look at what you need to do if you’re buying or selling second-hand goods.

The Health and Safety at Work Act requires that all products supplied for use at work or home (whether they are new or second-hand) are supplied in a safe condition. This includes providing the equipment with the relevant operator handbook or manuals.

This means you don’t need to factor your equipment into your PAT testing schedule straightaway.

However, we would recommend carrying out a visual examination before using the equipment for the first time. Check the plug, cable, and casing for damage, and make sure the plug has the BSi kitemark or CE mark on it.

We also recommend checking to make sure the electrical equipment hasn’t been recalled.

If you are not 100% confident that the equipment is safe to use, don’t use it.

If you are buying second-hand goods, it is worth asking if a PAT test has recently been carried out. This helps to show that the products you buy have been tested and are safe for use.

Do I need to do PAT testing before gifting something on?

No, you don’t have to carry out PAT testing before gifting electrical equipment to someone else. However, it’s important to make sure anything you give to a friend or family member is safe.

Before you gift a piece of electrical equipment, carry out a quick visual inspection and check for damage to the casing, plug, and cable. If you think it’s potentially unsafe, it’s best to err on the side of caution and not offer it as a gift.

What do I need to do if I am selling second-hand electrical equipment?

If you are selling second-hand electrical equipment, you need to ensure it is sold in a safe condition.

If someone buys faulty electrical goods from you, you could be held liable if they cause damage or injury.

PAT testing is the most effective way to ensure the equipment you sell is safe.
