Fire Safety in the Workplace

Fixed Wire Testing for Restaurants in Basingstoke

Restaurants put more demand on their electrical installation than most commercial buildings. Commercial ovens, fryers, extraction systems, dishwashers, refrigeration units and front-of-house lighting all draw heavily from the same circuits, often for 12 hours or more each day. An EICR (fixed wire test) checks the condition of the wiring, consumer unit and protective devices behind all that equipment to confirm the installation is safe and compliant. We carry out fixed wire testing for restaurants across Basingstoke and the wider Hampshire area.

Why Restaurant Circuits Need Regular Inspection

A restaurant kitchen is one of the hardest-working electrical environments in any commercial building. High-draw appliances running at full load for extended hours put sustained stress on your circuits, cabling and protective devices. Moisture from cooking and cleaning adds another layer of wear. Over time, this can cause insulation to degrade, connections to loosen and circuit breakers to become less reliable.

Periodic testing of your electrical installation is a strict legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. An EICR picks up these issues before they become a safety risk. NICEIC provides a useful independent overview of what an EICR involves and why regular testing matters.

What the Inspection Covers in a Restaurant

Our engineers inspect the fixed electrical installation throughout your restaurant. That includes:

  • The consumer unit and distribution boards
  • All circuit wiring serving kitchen, bar, dining and storage areas
  • Sockets, light fittings and switches
  • Protective devices including RCDs and circuit breakers
  • Three-phase supplies where commercial kitchen equipment requires them

The inspection does not cover portable appliances like blenders, food processors or till systems. Those are covered separately under PAT testing.

Each part of the installation is assessed and, where a defect is found, assigned an observation code. Our guide to EICR observation codes explains what C1, C2, C3 and FI codes mean and what action each one requires. If remedial work is needed, the electrician carrying out the repair issues an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC), which sits alongside your original EICR as proof the work met the required standard.

How Often Restaurants Need Fixed Wire Testing

We recommend fixed wire testing every five years for restaurants. If the on-site engineer finds that your installation is older or under heavier load than expected, they may recommend a shorter interval. That recommendation is recorded on your report and based on what the engineer sees on the day, not a default assumption.

Our guide to EICR frequency covers the recommended intervals for other commercial property types if you also operate pubs, cafes or other hospitality venues. We track your schedule and send reminders ahead of each due date so compliance stays current without you having to manage it.
