Fire Safety in the Workplace

PAT Testing for Conference Venues in Belfast

A supermarket has more electrical appliances per square metre than almost any other commercial building. Tills, self-checkouts, bakery ovens, deli slicers, refrigeration units, coffee machines, cleaning equipment and staff room appliances all need to be safe for staff and customers. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, you are responsible for making sure all of that equipment is maintained in a safe condition. Electrical equipment (PAT) testing checks every portable appliance on your premises for faults before they become a problem. We test supermarkets across Dundee and the wider Tayside area.

The Scale of Testing in a Supermarket

A typical supermarket can have several hundred individual portable appliances across the shop floor, bakery, butchery, warehouse, staff areas and offices. Each one gets a visual examination covering the casing, cable, plug and fuse, followed by up to three electrical tests depending on the construction of the appliance: earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity checks.

Our City & Guilds certified engineers work methodically through the site, area by area, so nothing gets missed, and results are recorded against a single asset register. You receive a certificate and itemised report listing every appliance, its result and, where something fails, the reason. PAT tests are priced per unit, so the number of appliances on site determines the overall cost. Our PAT testing cost guide explains how pricing works.

How We Test Without Disrupting Trading Hours

Supermarkets do not close. Even outside opening hours, stock is being delivered, shelves are being replenished and cleaning teams are working. We plan the testing route through your store so that customer-facing areas are tested outside peak trading periods, while back-of-house and staff areas can be handled during quieter operational windows.

We offer out-of-hours and weekend testing at no extra charge. Bakery equipment can be tested in the early hours before baking starts, while tills and self-checkouts are tested after close. The goal is to get every appliance tested without pulling equipment out of service during the hours you need it most. Electrical Safety First provides a useful independent overview of what PAT testing involves and why it matters for commercial premises.

Testing Frequency for Supermarkets

How often you should carry out PAT testing depends on four factors: how often the equipment is used, the environment it is used in, who is using it and the lifespan of the equipment. Supermarkets are a higher-use environment where appliances run continuously, staff turnover is high and equipment is exposed to heat, moisture and heavy daily wear.

We recommend a frequency based on your specific store conditions and will remind you when your next test is due. For a detailed explanation of the full testing process, our guide to PAT testing covers every stage from the visual examination through to your certificate.

Failed appliances are labelled and removed from use where practicable, so staff and customers are not exposed to faulty equipment between the test and the replacement.
