Commercial RCD Testing helps businesses check the operation of Residual Current Devices as part of a planned electrical maintenance regime. Our RCD testing confirms each device disconnects safely and within the required time. Before attendance, we agree which devices and circuits are included, site access, operational restrictions and any temporary shutdowns. This allows the responsible team to notify people affected and protect sensitive equipment before testing begins.
On site, a qualified and competent electrician visually inspects accessible RCDs and associated protective devices, checks operation using the integral test button and carries out the required instrument test at the device’s rated residual operating current using calibrated equipment. Disconnection times and observations are assessed against the current edition of BS 7671, commonly known in the UK as the IET Wiring Regulations, together with relevant manufacturer instructions.
Where testing requires the supply to be interrupted, safe isolation procedures are followed and warning notices are used as appropriate. Device details, test results and observations are recorded electronically. Any RCD that does not operate as expected, or any circuit that needs further investigation, is clearly identified and reported promptly to the site contact.
After testing, circuits are reinstated and Hawkesworth provides electronic records and appropriate supporting documentation. Where remedial work is required, the findings can be reviewed and a clear quotation provided before any additional work is agreed.

Plan
Before any testing begins, we agree access arrangements, shutdown requirements, and suitable testing times with you. Anyone affected by a temporary supply interruption is informed in advance, and safe isolation procedures are in place before work starts.
Test
We visually inspect each RCD and carry out functional testing using the integral test button, whilst the instrument testing confirms the device disconnects within the maximum permitted time. All testing follows BS 7671:2018 (Amendment 3) and is completed using a calibrated test instrument.
Report
We record and assess every test result against the requirements of BS 7671, with all circuits reinstated on completion. Any non-compliant devices or circuits are clearly identified and reported to your site contact, with supporting documentation and a remedial quotation where further work is required.

What is an RCD and why does it need testing?
A Residual Current Device monitors electrical current and disconnects the supply automatically if it detects an imbalance. Regular testing confirms the device will disconnect correctly and within the required time when it needs to.
Will RCD testing interrupt the electrical supply?
How often should RCDs be tested?
The frequency of RCD testing depends on the type of RCD and the environment it’s in. It’s generally recommended that RCDs are tested at least every three months by pressing the built-in test button, to confirm the mechanical operation of the device.
However, more comprehensive testing by a qualified electrician is recommended annually, or more frequently in high-risk environments like construction sites or areas with damp conditions.
